RUNNING WITH GABRIELLE NELSON
You snowboard a lot in the winter — do you feel like running in the summer helps keep you in shape for the next season? Or what motivates you to lace up and head out?
Definitely—running in the summer plays a big role in staying in shape for snowboard season. It helps maintain my cardio endurance and keeps my legs strong and responsive, which makes a difference once I’m back on the mountain. But it’s not just about training—running gives me that same sense of freedom and connection to the outdoors that I love about snowboarding. What motivates me is simply the desire to be outside and move my body, knowing it often leaves me feeling not just physically but mentally better after I’ve pushed myself… and when I’m not motivated, I choose discipline and do it anyway. It doesn’t always have to be far or fast: consistency, in my experience, is what makes the biggest difference over time.
What are your best tips for someone who wants to start running but struggles with motivation? (Asking for a friend.)
Start small and don’t stress about pace or distance—consistency is more important than speed. Focus on how it makes you feel rather than how far you go. Try to notice the little things that make it enjoyable: the fresh air, the music or podcast you’re into, the sense of accomplishment afterward. Set simple, achievable goals and celebrate progress, even if it’s just showing up. If motivation is tough, find a running buddy or sign up for a low-key race to give yourself a reason to stick with it. And most of all, be kind to yourself—some runs will feel great, others won’t, and that’s all part of the process!
Maybe it’s about romanticizing the process too — what’s your ultimate run vibe? Time of day, location, weather?
Romanticizing the process can make all the difference! Especially considering running is just as much a mental battle as it is physical. I absolutely LOVE a trail run near a body of water. I’m typically either running along the river or running near a body of water that I can jump in at the end of my run. Time of day doesn’t matter so much to me but when it comes to weather, I’m a 60’s and 70’s degree fahrenheit girl. Not too hot or too cold. :)
And of course, we have to ask — which Eivy pieces are your top picks for running or staying active during summer?
LOVE the Cover Up Top paired with the Venture Biker shorts or Pocket Tights depending on weather. :) You can’t go wrong with any of the colors or patters - they’re all so fun!
