Gotland by bike - Follow Stine on her cycling trip

A true sign of summer for me is the annual biking trip to the Swedish island of Gotland. Situated in the Baltic Sea, off the southeastern coast of Sweden, Gotland is the largest island in the region and has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Since the landscape is pretty flat and has nice roads all across the island it is an ideal place to visit by bike. Midlands you still have plenty of woods to set up your camp and stay overnight.

And yes, in Sweden you can actually stay over in your tent or hammock pretty much where you want. We have this thing called "Allemansrätten", also known as the "freedom to roam" or "right of public access," which is a pretty awesome thing in Sweden that allows you to explore and enjoy nature freely. It's like having a giant playground where you can go hiking, biking, and camping in beautiful places without having to ask anyone for permission.

Well, of course, there are still some guidelines to follow. You need to show respect for the environment, like not damaging plants or disturbing animals. It's important to clean up after yourself and not leave any litter behind. Also, you can't just barge into someone's backyard or mess with cultivated areas / protected nature reserves. Privacy and property rights are still important.

Thanks to Allemansrätten we managed to find great camping spots wherever we went, and we did not have to search for long. Since the straps of the Levitate Hammock - Leopard are tree friendly we felt safe about putting them in any type of tree that seemed steady enough.

After arriving very late with the boat to Visby Haven, we found a spot a few kilometers south of Visby. The next morning we biked right over to the East Coast between Ljugarn and Katthammarsvik and found a great spot right next to the ocean which was ideal for that morning swim we aimed to take. Also, one sleeps pretty well in the Levitate Hammock whilst listening to the soothing waves hitting the sandy beach just a stone's throw away.

Then it was time to head back to the West Coast to grab a boat back to the mainland of Sweden. Many hours on the bike left us with pretty sore legs and bottoms but another experience richer, and many more happy memories in our memory bags.
